In common with many of the features of St Helens Parish Church, the pulpit is made of Oak. It is very highly decorated and includes in its carving some words in latin. Can you find them?
The pulpit is where Vicars and other too preach sermons, unfolding and explaining what the words read in the bible mean and how they can help us to live lives that follow Jesus and seek to do as he would have us do day to day. These days, we more commonly use the small lecturn to preach from but on occasion the pulpit is still used. In St Helens Parish Church, as in all Church of England churches our worship is shaped around Word (the words of the bible which tell the unified story of God in Jesus - the Living Word) and Sacrament (visible actions which point to the invisible grace of God such as Holy Communion and Baptism). The pulpit and the altar are therefore central elements of Church architecture.
